My Music - The Gab - Slaughterhouse 12 to 5

Here’s another sample of a track from The Gab. This one’s called Slaughterhouse 12 to 5. The full track runs for 14 minutes!

This is the start of the trilogy I’ve been talking about. I just wanted a drum pattern which was very edgy, not too complicated…put powerful enough to convey what we were about as a trio.

Then move to a quick change of melody, then back to the original sax riff. Simple as it sounds, we always thought this was basically an exercise in telepathy, (as was the whole album), because it was pure improvisation broken up with melodies and riffs and time signature changes etc., etc..

The whole raison d’etre of The Gab was just that. Players trying to acknowledge each others abilities by letting them breathe within a structure, allowing a certain amount of freedom for improv….and kicking ass at the same time!

The title of the track was Malcolm’s idea. We rehearsed in a disused abattoir in Sydney. We always started at 12 midday & finished at 5 pm. As we were all working in the same band at nights. The Nancy Kiel Band.
Enjoy!
